James Dondero, Private Equity Investor

Jim Dondero is the co-founder and president of Highland Capital Management, a private equity firm founded in 1993. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree of Accounting and Finance in 1984. He started working for American Express upon graduation and worked there until 1989. Then, he earned the title of Chief Investment officer of GIC, a Protective Life Company subsidiary — not many people become CIO after only four years experience. After working at GIC, Mr. James Dondero decided to branch off and make his own firm, which he did with Highland Capital Management.

Aside from his work at Highland Capital Management, Mr. Dondero is active on the board of chairmen for several companies. Dondero was recently appointed to Chairman of the Board of NexPoint Residential Trust, and the President. NexPoint is a subsidiary of NexBank, which is owned primarily by Mr. Dondero. James Dondero was the best fit at president of the company compared to other applicants because of his experience with NexBank. Mr. James Dondero is also a member of the board of directors for Cornerstone Healthcare, MGM Studios, American Banknote, and CCS Medical.

Highland Capital Management is a private equity firm that focuses primarily on the collateralized loan obligation market. A Dedicated Professional; Shaygan Kheradpir

Shaygan Kheradpir is a multi talented individual who has held a variety of positions in companies ranging from Verizon to Barclays. Shaygan Kheradpir gained vast amounts of cultural experience through his upbringing in multiple countries; he was born in London but grew up in Iran and attended high school in Switzerland. It was at this point that he moved to the United States to further his studies at Cornell University, where he earned his Bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degree in electrical engineering.

Professionally, Shaygan Kheradpir started his career with GTE Laboratories; it was here that he began working with network routing, management and control. His tenacity and dedication were evident to all those around him and he would eventually be promoted to chief information officer.

Kheradpir landed his first major position through Verizon, where he was appointed president of their E-business division., before eventually becoming Verizon’s CIO/CTO. As with GTE he was completely dedicated to the company and saw his hard work payoff, he contributed immensely to the company‚Äôs diversification of telecommunication services. While at Verizon he implemented the 30-day prototype cycle, this allowed his small teams to develop and test new technologies far more rapidly than usual. He has been credited with not only creating iobi, an organizational tool, but also having a direct impact on Verizon FiOS. Although Kheradpir and his 7,000 strong team were constantly pushing out new ideas and products he managed to decrease overall spending within the technology department. He managed to reduce the overall budget of his department to 4% of revenue, which is 2% less than the industry average. He was known to be extremely aggressive in his negotiations with vendors in order to reduce prices.

His next position held was at Barclays where he was Chief Operating Officer, again Kheradpir has a hand in a number of developments and new products. His importance within the company was displayed through his promotion to Chief Operations and Technology Officer and marked the first time a technology executive was part of the executive team at Barclays.

Kheradpir also held a brief position within Juniper Networks where he was appointed CEO in 2014. He was a figure head for the Integrated Operating Plan (IOP) which reduced expenses, bought back stock and increased dividends.

Kheradpir is an extremely successful businessman who has many accomplishments under his belt. He is known for being extremely dedicated to the companies and that he works for and expects all his employees to show the same type of commitments.

Scientist Researching Artificial Photosynthesis Announce a Big Breathrough

This week, scientists working at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California at Berkeley announced a major breakthrough in efforts to devise a commercially viable artificial photosynthetic process. The discovery could eventually revolutionize the way many drugs, plastics and fuels are produced.

Photosynthesis is a natural process undertaken by many plants and bacteria. Using photosynthesis, for example, a plant can transform the toxic gas carbon dioxide into oxygen using only the power of sunlight and water.

Scientists hope to harness the power of photosynthesis to be able to transform carbon dioxide produced as a waste product of manufacturing into other, more useful substances, using solar power so that carbon dioxide is not emitted into the atmosphere where it could contribute to pollution.

About.me said that researchers Piedong Yang, Christopher Chang and Michelle Chang recently published papers in the journal Nano Letters describing an artificial photosynthetic system they have developed using nanotechnology to synthesize the components of carbon dioxide and water into acetate, with the help of anaerobic bacteria. Piedong Yang reported “Our system has the potential to fundamentally change the chemical and oil industry in that we can produce chemicals and fuels in a totally renewable way, rather than extracting them from deep below the ground.”

Their recent paper is entitled “Nanowire bacteria hybrids for unassisted solar carbon dioxide fixation to value-added chemicals.” The new system may hold utility to pharmaceutical research.

High-Contrast Glasses Will Help the Blind See

The UK scientists from the Oxford University have the solution for blind people to start seeing. A pair of glasses that transforms the surroundings into an image with high contrast and in-depth representation of the space. The result is a bunch of white and black outlines, where you can notice shapes well enough to distinguish a man waiving his hand from a plant in the wind.

The invention is directed to people with very bad vision. Mashable said that only in UK there are 360,000 registered as blind. It is well known how people with disabilities suffer from the lack of independence. Wearing a pair of glasses like the ones from the Oxford invention would be very helpful. The only challenge that is left is to make the device smaller, as it is very heavy and not aesthetic at this moment. It is a certain thing that the blind people wouldn’t mind it even like this. Google helped by funding the research, as the earlier prototypes showed by the scientists were very convincing. The result did not disappoint. As soon as the final amendment of making the glasses smaller will be ready, the mass production is going to start.
