End Citizens United Levels Charges Against Rick Scott Of Florida

End Citizens United, a political action committee (PAC), recently filed a complaint against Florida Governor Rick Scott with the Federal Election Commission. They are charging that he is using a “super PAC” to fund his Senate campaign which is against the law. The complaint alleges that Rick Scott is doing this in order to maneuver around the limits that the federal government has put in place to limit how much direct contributions there can be to any political campaign. To Date Rick Scott has raised about $78 million in his effort to win a Senate seat.

A Super PAC can raise and spend as much money as it wants to support a political campaign but it is against campaign law for them to work directly with that campaign. This is called the anti-coordination law and End Citizens United is calling out Rick Scott for violating it. They say that Rick Scott is working directly with the New Republican PAC which he had previously been the chairman of just before announcing his run for a US Senate seat. New Republican has been aggressively backing Rick Scott’s campaign.

Rick Scott through his spokesperson has denied these allegations that End Citizens United has raised. However, End Citizens United showed documentation that supports  position. This documentation shows that Rick Scott continued to work with this Super PAC after starting his political run. The New Republican website even listed Rick Scott as their chairman as of January 2018.

End Citizens United was formed after the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are people and that giving money is free speech. This ended up flooding politics with money and giving the rich and powerful even more of a say in how America operates. The goal of this PAC is to shut that vast inflow of money down and return power to the citizens of this nation. They exclusively support politicians who pledge to pursue campaign finance reform.

Rick Scott has never shown himself to be a politician who supports campaign finance reform. An example of this is that both he and Rick Scott are working with the same exact fundraiser, Jenny Rucker. Additionally, he has been using the same address as New Republican which ties him even closer to this Super PAC. Also, it was New Republican which provided the funds for a poll that Rick Scott had conducted recently.

End Citizen’s United devotion to overturn a Supreme Court decision

The 2010 Supreme Court decision would change the nature of politics in F.E.C and Citizens United. They were concerned with the idea that allowed special interested groups and wealthy individuals to spend their money on the United States elections. In reality, the polls in the United States could be bought because the funds could not be traced or limited to any amount.

In 1st March of 2015, End Citizens United was created to fight against the idea that “corporations are individuals,” and to end the massive funding to political groups by people or corporations with ulterior motives that desire the outcome of the election to go in a particular way.

On the hand, the End Citizens receives its funding from grass root donations rather than by big money. It is a group that is devoted to not only see pro-reform candidates elected but also it attempts to stop Citizen’s United, with the issue of using money in politics at the limelight.

At the time when End Citizens was launched, the group managed to raise over $2 million from donors to support them. Besides, they are on record for raking $25 million to $30 million during the whole cycle as stated by Richard Carbo, the communication director.
With an ultimate goal to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision, the group has signed over 325,000 people to End Citizen’s United’s petition which demands the Congress to pass the legislation. The figure is expected to rise with the group’s partnership with “Ready for Hillary.” Besides, it will rent out some email lists to reach to the likely liberal supporters. End Citizens United publicized their endorsement of 11 candidates that comprised of Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado as well as Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin.

As noted by Carbo, the existence of other PACs which focused on campaign finance reforms was not closely related to his group since “there is a vacuum in the talks that addressed the political side and getting individuals elected” who are willing to make changes in the existing election laws. It meant that backing candidates who favor campaign finance reform and assist in the fight against Citizens United are a significant and unique boost for the group.

Among the group’s plans is setting up an independent expenditure arm that would back the candidates with financial support through various initiatives such as polling, television ads, and direct mailers. With this kind of infrastructure in place, it will facilitate more candidates who subscribe to their action to get elected.

End Citizens United continues to make the public aware of the Supreme Court’s ruling while maintaining pressure on political players and Supreme Court not to make things worse than they are at the moment. Besides, the group is doing what it can to support candidates that champion for finance reforms.

James Bopp Is Behind End Citizens United

James Bopp is the lawyer who was not allowed to air a 60 min movie by the court. He is a lawyer who belongs to Terre Haute, Indiana. He was appearing for his client which was a conservative non-profit organization that was named End Citizens United. The movie in question was titled, Hillary: The Movie. This was to be aired during Democratic presidential primaries. The movie had been produced by Citizens United.

This was when the Federal Election Commission (FEC) stated that Citizens United was not allowed to air this film during the primary season as it would be like a campaign ad that would be lasting for 90 minutes. Besides, no one would be able to identify who had paid for this campaign. James Bopp argued in court that this movie was just like any other movie that people see on 60 Minutes. Hence he asked for First Amendment protection for its creators.

But soon, Supreme Court reversed this ruling. Many arguments of Bopp were accepted. In this way, several facets of campaign-finance law were wiped out. This was a 100-year-old legacy that was simply wiped out. Based on his arguments, it was maintained that campaign spending was a form of speech as per a 1976 law. Hence it needs to be protected by the First Amendment. Such protection has to be extended to corporations too. The ruling stated that the corporations also have First Amendment rights just like an average voter. Hence it is unconstitutional to keep them away from spending money for supporting or defeating any specific candidates of their choice.

In this way, Bopp was able to chip away the campaign-finance regulations of the nation and led to Citizens United. But Bopp is still pursuing challenges. He wants to dismantle practically all the facets of campaign-finance regulation. This is why End Citizens United is such an important organization today. Its work cannot be ignored anymore.

During the first quarter of this year, End Citizens United managed to rake in $4 million. But it is not resting there. It is gearing itself for the 2018 mid-term elections. Besides, it is well aware that it would have to raise much more for helping its Democrat candidates in those elections.

End Citizens United is yet trying to figure out which campaigns to support during those elections. A few have been identified, but more are to be defined. The goal of End Citizens United is to help elect those Democrat candidates to the Congress who can support the campaign finance reforms.

Typically Bopp uses small organizations that are mission driven in order to find loopholes in the law which can benefit wealthy corporations along with their political allies. This is exactly what he managed to achieve through Citizens United.

End Citizens United: Establishing their Name In The World

Before 2015, no one had heard about End Citizen United. However, after its establishment in August 2015, the Group has garnered great attention from the public. This is because they have a clearly defined goal: overturning the Supreme Court ruling passed in 2010.

How was the group going to achieve that? They are going to collect signatures and raising $25 million towards the agenda.

The question is; why did they wait until 2015 to start the campaign? The reason is so as to get Democrats and the liberals elected who will support the agenda for reversing the Supreme Court ruling.

The group seems to have achieved great success because in only one month they were able to raise $2 million.

In 2010, the Supreme Court overturned the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act that prohibited the use of Soft money in the election. The Supreme Court was providing a ruling on a case presented by the Citizen United. The PAC wanted the court to reverse the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act clause that prohibited ‘electioneeirng communications.’ Even though the Supreme Court upheld the law on advocacy ads, they changed the soft money law.

The law states that the corporation and committees were not allowed to raise money or spend money that was not subject to federal limits. According to the End Citizens United, the ruling would adversely affect the elections.

They raised concerns that the election will no longer be free and fair. This is robbing the American people their Democratic right. By reversing the law, the billionaires now had the chance to influence the elections to their favor.

The primary goal of the End Citizens United is to raise money to influence the Congress to overturn the Supreme Court ruling.

The first agenda of the group is to have people elected who support the vision. That is why they endorsed 11 Democrat candidates. They will then raise the issue of money to be a national priority and to advance their agenda they will use the grassroots members. End Citizens United greatest supporters are the grassroots activists.

The ultimate goal of the campaign is to have a constitutional amendment, and by the end of 2015, 325,000 people had already signed the petition. After partnering with ‘Ready for Hilary,’ the group received $4 million more emails.

While the desire to have a constitutional amendment is genuine, the dream may be far-fetched according to the critics. There has not been a constitutional amendment since 1992. Despite having the influence, it will hard to get the Congress to amend the constitution.

They can, however, be commended for providing the public with information on the Supreme Court ruling. The group has also kept the pressure on the Supreme Court and the political leaders not to make the situation worse.
